UK higher education institutions are under growing pressure to improve student outcomes, increase operational efficiency and deliver more with constrained resources.

AI presents a significant opportunity, from identifying students who may need support earlier, to reducing administrative workload and enabling more personalised student experiences.

But for many institutions, the foundations needed to scale AI are not yet in place.

Fragmented systems, disconnected data, limited capacity and organisational silos are creating a growing gap between AI ambition and institutional readiness.

This new Forrester research, commissioned by TechnologyOne, explores where UK tertiary education stands today and what institutions need to do to turn AI investment into scalable, institution-wide impact.

The research surveyed more than 300 UK education leaders responsible for student experience, ERP or AI initiatives, providing a uniquely UK perspective on the opportunities and challenges ahead.

AI adoption in education is accelerating, but institutions continue to face significant challenges in data quality, system readiness and transformation capacity.

18%
AI ambition is outpacing readiness – Only 18% of education leaders say their current systems can support AI-driven capabilities without significant additional investment.

Fragmentation remains widespread – Just 8% say their institutions are fully integrated.

AI investment is accelerating – 64% expect investment in AI and intelligent automation to increase by more than 11% over the next 12 months.
